ENGL 1301(SS) Literary Analysis

ENGL 1301(SS) Literary Analysis

Your 6-8 page literary analysis is due today.  It MUST be in MLA format, Times New Roman 12 pt font, with the properly formatted heading and title.

A Literary Analysis is an argumentative essay about a piece of literature which utilizes the literary elements of the selection to make the argument.  The argument stems from what you believe the story/poem is conveying to the reader.  Is there a larger objective beyond the details of the story?  In this essay the following items (literary elements) should be scrutinized in order to build your case and provide evidence to the reader that the theme is what you believe it to be and that it is advanced by the surrounding literary elements:

Plot, Point of View, Setting, Characterization, Dialogue, Symbolism, any Irony, use of Metaphors, and the Genre.

If you use the opinions of any literary critics, or scholars to construct your argument–they must be cited.  Any specific parts of the selection need to be cited by line number (for poems) or by paragraph number (for short stories).  To properly cite outside sources, both in-text citations and a works cited page are required.  Be sure that both are done according to MLA format.  For further information on writing a literary analysis, check this resource by OWL @ PURDUE Link (Links to an external site.)
