Eyewitness testimony (POST)

How reliable is eyewitness testimony?

Watch the two videos posted in this week’s module (they are both short, only 4 1/2 minutes each).

Then watch the Ted Talk in this link: (about 17 minutes)

Now let’s talk about eyewitness testimony.

Many people are convicted based on eyewitness testimony.  Is that a concern after watching the two videos, why or why not?

What can police officers do to limit the mistakes made by eyewitnesses? There is a lot of research out there about how line-ups should be presented, both in person and photo lineups.  What practices did police used to use that  resulted in false identifications?  What can police do better?  (do some research on this, you’ll find great information on the correct way to do line-ups, etc)

How should prosecutors handle cases when the main evidence that points to a particular suspect is the testimony of an eyewitness?

If you were on a jury, would you convict someone based almost solely on eyewitness testimony?  Why or why not?  If you said no, what other evidence would you need in order to convict?
