UNIT 4- DISCUSSION POST

1. After watching Sam Dunn’s documentary, Metal: A Headbanger’s Journey, please answer the following questions with SPECIFIC EXAMPLES AND SUPPORT FROM THE VIDEO as well as your own observations on what you saw.

Since Sam Dunn is a metal fan as well as an anthropologist, he tries to show the evolution of Heavy Metal through the different branches and subcultures of fans that formed as this genre of music progressed. Please discuss at least 2 branches of metal that you saw and tell us your opinions on them. In your discussion of at least 2 branches of metal, please include:

-How this branch came about and what bands and types of music that came before it influenced this branch.

-The major bands in this branch.

-The major songs and the themes/meanings of the lyrics of these songs in this branch.

-The SUBCULTURE of fans who listen to this branch of metal. Who are they, what do they wear? What are their beliefs? What are their rituals- such as actions at concerts, the way they talk, etc.?

Please be specific in your response and answer these questions by carefully observing this video.

2. After watching the Rush video and this band’s making of 2112, which came out in 1976 and Moving Pictures, which came out in 1981, please answer the following questions with SPECIFIC EXAMPLES AND SUPPORT FROM THE VIDEO as well as your own observations on what you saw.

Rush is considered a “prog rock” band. This means that they played progressive rock since all 3 members were musical virtuosos while the lyrics in their songs were considered more “intellectual.” Thus, please discuss both albums according to these ideas.

-2112- Your thoughts on the musicianship as well as the lyrics in the songs on this album. Remember, this album was one of the first metal concept albums where Side 1 of the album told a story through the progression of songs. Pick out specific songs, how they were written, and how they were produced in the studio, how they were played by the members of Rush.

-Moving Pictures- Your thoughts on the musicianship as well as the lyrics in the songs on this album. Pick out specific songs, how they were written, and how they were produced in the studio, how they were played by the members of Rush.
