Ethical Situation 1

You are NOT the principle investigator in a research study of HIV/AIDS positive women who are incarcerated, but you are one of the researchers who has received permission to interview some of the women who volunteered to participate. One woman gives you inappropriate information about another prisoner whom she states propositioned her for sex, and the interviewee claims this prisoner has AIDS. As you leave the prison, the warden asks you to relate what happened during this interview.

Discuss your responsibilities as a researcher in this sensitive study. There are a number of critical elements: the interviewee divulging information about another prisoner’s possible HIV/AIDS status and behaviors, confidentiality and protection of human subjects, the warden’s request and your ethical responsibility to the study and to your institution.  Choose a point in this situation and discuss the moral and ethical implications of this situation. How should this be handled? What is the issue that has been raised? What document(s) may be used for guidance with this situation?
